On Tuesday, Nov. 15, the Berkeley City Council honored longtime Friends of the Fountain and Walk leaders Sara and Harvard Holmes (pictured at center in the photo above) with an official proclamation, praising the couple for their years of dedication to FOFW and the community.

The proclamation, put forward by District 5 Councilmember Laurie Capitelli and signed by the entire council, recognizes the Holmeses for their longtime roles as FOFW’s president and treasurer, but also for “having been the heart and soul of the organization.” The couple recently decided to step down from those roles to concentrate on other activities.

Sara and Harvard were instrumental in the effort to re-create the fountain and restore Fountain Walk in the 1990s, and have given endless hours of volunteer service to FOFW’s work in maintaining both city treasures. As the proclamation notes, they “helped shape the role of FOFW as a true partner with the City of Berkeley, making it the first community organization of its kind in the city.”

In accepting the honor, Sara told those on hand at the council meeting that her work on behalf of FOFW had enriched her life, and allowed her to meet many wonderful people in the community.

The Holmeses plan to leave the FOFW board of directors in the new year. But even as they begin to step away, they are working diligently to ensure that the many duties and tasks they have overseen are handed off to other directors, and are playing a leading role in FOFW’s annual year-end fund-raising campaign.

On behalf of the FOFW board and the entire Berkeley community, I want to echo the council’s proclamation and thank Sara and Harvard for all they have done to “keep these beloved landmarks operating and preserved for future generations.”

— Michael Gray, FOFW president
